Touch Africa needs to be sustainable. Too many community upliftment projects have failed simply due to the fact that there is no person or organisation in place that will ensure that the improvements and repairs effected remain in good condition. The Touch Africa concept is all about sustainability and sufficient funding is required to ensure that this in fact happens.
The criteria for the first year (2007) was to produce a television series which would create some ground swell between MNET and DSTV subscribers and create strong brand equity for the name Touch Africa.
Touch Africa was successful in producing the television series and Mnet/DSTV our media partners ensured the flighting of the series, which has had the desired outcome. Individuals and companies are now asking to become involved.
Planned projects for 2008 include the following:
| School upliftment in 5 areas | R650 000 |
| Life Straw Project in the 5 areas | R500 000 |
| Community Hall/Town Hall refurbishment | R500 000 |
| Touch Africa project co coordinators in each area | R350 000 |
| Production of Touch Africa television series | R2 500 000 |
| Project Technilamp for 5 areas | R100 000 |
| Project Creche for 5 areas | R500 000 |
| Rehabilitation of sports fields in all 5 areas | R800 000 |
| TOTAL BUDGET COST | R 6 500 000 |
Transparency, sustainability and accountability is critical to the success of Touch Africa. Too many projects in our history of South Africa have failed due to the fact that there has not been sufficient infrastructure in place to ensure that these are sustained. Our Touch Africa project co coordinators will be employed on a full time basis and transportation will be available for these individuals to ensure that all of the work done is well maintained, that the local communities and municipalities are kept in the loop and that our sponsors are provided with regular feedback on the progress of the projects in which they invest.
